Useful things

While tinkering and playing around with my computer, I sometimes end up with something useful. Today, for example, we arrived at a guide to assembling a computer, developed a method for printing leaflets, and finally ended with a course on sewing book signatures1.

Assembling an AM5 computer

A practical guide to assembling a specific AM5 build, from preparation and installation to the first power-on and troubleshooting. It includes checklists and stop checks; verify the components and motherboard revision against their manuals before starting.

Reading PDF · A5 booklet: one signature · Markdown

We also made an example with two 16-page signatures, including a cover, title page, publication details and practical appendices. One signature is more economical for the guide alone: two signatures need two more A4 sheets, so we filled the extra pages with useful material. The ISBN and publisher are fictional; the product selection is illustrative and not sponsored.

Portable document and print standard

A practical method for Markdown documents, readable PDFs and printing A5 booklets on A4 sheets. It covers page imposition, print settings and binding methods, including sewing one or several signatures.

For double-sided printing with binding, mirrored margins leave extra room next to the spine so text does not disappear into the fold or under the stitching. The inner margin is on the right of even pages and on the left of odd pages. For unbound sheets, equal margins are often sufficient.

Markdown

The documents are in Bulgarian. The booklet PDFs are ready for double-sided printing on A4 landscape paper. Choose “Flip on short edge”: when you turn the sheet left or right like a book page, the text on both sides should be upright. Print one PDF page per side at 100%, with no additional page arrangement or scaling. For the two-signature version, fold the first four sheets together, then the next four separately, and bind the signatures in order. Test with one sheet for your printer.

1 A book signature is a folded sheet or group of folded sheets whose pages are arranged and sewn together with other signatures to form the book block. ↩
